A standout among Avatar: The Last Airbender's most beloved episodes receives an exclusive Magic: The Gathering collector's set.
Usually, recap episodes are disliked among audiences as an unnecessary diversion, or at best tolerated as essential in television in the era of episodic releases. This wasn't always the situation, but Avatar: The Last Airbender demonstrated this via "The Ember Island Players," a beloved segment during its concluding run that is now receiving an exclusive Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair release.
Details regarding the collector's edition
The entire Secret Lair superdrop for the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender edition was announced recently. This includes five distinct sets, and although one titled "My Cabbages!" is clearly funny homage to the show's most famous minor character, the remaining sets feel a bit lacking creativity, except for one standout: "The Ember Island Players."
Drawing from episode 17 from season 3 of Avatar: The Last Airbender, this special set includes these particular cards:
- 1x Phantasmal Image as "Absolutely Accurate Actor"
- 1x Braid of Fire
- 1x Cursed Mirror
- 1x Mask of Memory
- 1x Thespian's Stage
What makes this episode remains memorable
Viewers of Avatar clearly recall this episode, which served as a recap of Aang and the group's quest before the series' finale. Unlike typical clip shows, or retrospective segments, "The Ember Island Players" wasn't motivated by budget restrictions or production issues. The show's makers specifically aimed to provide audiences a chance to revisit the series' story, but they decided to do it creatively.
Throughout the segment, the heroes observe a play inspired by their journeys on a stage located on Ember Island, titled The Boy in the Iceberg. The entire performance is inaccurate, over-the-top, and utterly comical. It succeeds since it plays with the characters' perception of themselves, juxtaposing them with how the world (and notably the Fire Nation citizens) sees them. It has an ideal level of self-awareness, and it becomes arguably the best adaptation of Avatar released so far.
Value and cost
When it comes to cost-effectiveness, this is a great Secret Lair for one simple reason: Braid of Fire. This card trades for $20 and $40 on various platforms as of now, while for $29.99 you can obtain the entire Secret Lair, or for $39.99 for the shiny edition.
Magic's Avatar: The Last Airbender set is available during early access events on Nov. 14 and launches globally on Nov. 21.
