Abigail Spanberger Makes a Landmark as First Female Governor

Throughout 250 years, Virginia has seen 74 governors, each one of them male. This week, Abigail Spanberger broke this longstanding tradition by being elected as the state's inaugural woman leader in Virginia's records.

A Campaign Focused On Cost-of-Living Issues and Strategic Opposition

Ex- US representative and Central Intelligence Agency case officer succeeded with a campaign that stressed everyday expenses and strategically opposed Trump-era measures rather than the person.

Early Life and Education

Born in the Garden State on a summer day in 1979, she moved to a suburb of Richmond, Virginia at thirteen. Her dad was an military serviceman who later worked in police work; her mother was a healthcare professional and community helper.

She enrolled in the Virginia's flagship university, obtaining a diploma in French literature. Post-graduation, she had a short stint as a classroom instructor before embarking on a life of service.

“I grew up knowing that I wanted to emulate my father and I did,” she informed followers at a gathering in the city of Norfolk over the weekend.

Public Service Career

At the federal agency, she worked cases involving drugs, abusers and financial criminals. She executed legal orders, often being the sole female on the arrest team. She then joined the CIA and focused on national security, working covertly and overseas.

Life Change

In 2014, she and her husband Adam, an engineer, considered their future. Residing on the Pacific coast, they were considering another overseas assignment. They pulled out a globe and asked their oldest child, then in kindergarten, where they should go. Virginia, she answered, because “everyone we love lives in Virginia”.

Spanberger stated at her rally: “And so we chose to shift from a path of service to country, to service to community because she was right. Those dear to us lives in Virginia.”

Congressional Run

Back in the commonwealth, she volunteered with an advocacy organization, which combats gun violence, and started a Girl Scout troop. In 2017, she chose to seek office, which advisers told her was a “impossible task” because no Democrat had secured the seventh district in half a century.

“But I witnessed what the president was implementing with his authority and how he was creating conflict. And I saw my representative over and over again work against the Affordable Care Act. And I realized I had to take action. So spoiler: I was victorious.”

Moderate Stance

In Washington, she quickly became linked to the centrist group, a alliance of centrist and fiscally moderate lawmakers. She focused on lower-profile issues: expanding broadband to the countryside, combating drug trafficking and support for former troops.

She earned a standing for collaborating with colleagues across the aisle and was consistently rated as the most cooperative member of the state's congressmembers. She was outspoken about political rhetoric that she believed turned off centrists, warning her party against partisan language that could be weaponised in swing areas.

Political Alliance

Along with Congresswomen a former CIA analyst and an ex-navy pilot, she was called a member of the “centrist alliance” in contrast to the progressive “group” of AOC.

State Leadership Bid

In that autumn, she announced she would leave Congress for a fourth term and would instead seek the state's top office in the next election.

Her campaign highlighted ideas of public service, support for schools and infrastructure and protection of democratic institutions. Her CIA background gave her authority on defense issues and she described public service as a calling rather than a job.

Election Victory

This enabled her to counter rival candidate her challenger's attacks on social topics, including the assertion that Spanberger is an radical on civil rights and transgender healthcare.

Spanberger, who consistently argued that communities should decide whether transgender students can participate in competitive sports, portrayed her opponent as the candidate more out of step with the center of the Virginia electorate.
