As Swimmers Escaped Attack, Viral Photo Captures Rescuer Dashing ‘All Out’ To the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent local of Bondi, describes the renowned shoreline as her own backyard. On a recent weekend night, she, along with numerous neighbors, noticed loud noises echoing around the neighbourhood.

“Everyone did, but I reasoned it was daylight and no one could see them,” she explains. Exiting her residence, she witnessed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The faces she saw made it clear something was wrong.

While standing on the road, speaking to a duo who had hurried up the slope still dripping wet, she became aware of someone coming up at her rear. The person was a lifeguard, dashing in the direction of Bondi unshod from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while carrying a medical device.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I only caught a glimpse of this blur of blue,” Ching describes. “He was zooming past. It was just him running in the opposite way that all the others was trying to flee, carrying that big kit and barefoot … He moved towards something that certainly every part of you would signal you to go in the other direction.

“Without a second thought, but just fully pedal to the metal sprinting.”

An Iconic Image of Heroism In the Wake of Tragedy

The image taken by Ching of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as a prime example of instances of heroism in the following of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, explained that Doolan, called “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to support the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to work with emergency personnel, officers and ambulance crews caring for dozens of those hurt.

Collective Outpouring and Support

Doolan’s actions was part of a broader narrative to emerge from the community, with the beach facility next to the scene of the incident becoming a temporary treatment center. Accounts show that fellow lifeguards were also seen helping out, such as going into the water to assist people in distress.

In the days after the events, comments of appreciation flooded in. A social media message conveyed gratitude for the responders who demonstrated that “goodness will always triumph over evil”.

The team of lifeguards published a statement, explaining they were “coming to terms with what transpired”.

“We are grateful all for your thoughtful words and encouragement. We are deeply moved by the kindness shown towards our personnel,” the team wrote. “In time, we will share our stories in the hope that it helps those affected.”

Local Government Praise

Waverley council, the local authority that hires many full-time beach safety officers, stated that the staff rose to the occasion from the moment the shooting began right into late that evening.

“People have shared so many powerful accounts, but the widely-circulated image of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help save lives is incredible,” commented a local official.

“The team show altruism every day in ensuring our world-famous shores secure for the public, but what we saw on that evening should be commended.

“During this time of sorrow and grapple with the terror of this heinous terrorist attack, I think it is crucial that we reflect on just how much good we have witnessed in the face of such hatred.”
