Correctional Facilities Cannot Be Resolved Overnight, Minister Says, as Police Hunt For Two Individuals Mistakenly Freed
Shadow justice secretary the shadow minister has described the circumstances as a "total mess," speaking this morning.
Appearing on a broadcast interview, he pointed to remarks made by the justice minister after a previous inmate discharge, saying that the minister would implement stricter verifications.
"There was a delay of six days for the corrections department supposedly to even become aware this occurred" and notify the authorities, Jenrick explains, "leaving them a week late in the search to find him."
The shadow minister criticises Lammy's performance during recent PMQs and alleges him of a "total failure in responsibility."
Speaking about incorrect inmate discharges in broader terms, Jenrick underlines that "every single accidental discharge [...] is unforgivable."
He admits there were similar incidents under the previous Conservative government, but claims the number "has risen significantly" under Labour.
Advocating additional correctional facilities to be built, he continues: "The public want to see now are proper safeguards implemented."
"This represents a particular bureaucratic error by the Ministry of Justice overseen by David Lammy," the opposition member concludes.
