Democrats Denounce Trump After He Claims They Should Face Execution
Democratic officials voiced fury after the ex-president alleged a contingent of Democratic representatives of being "turncoats" and declared they should be taken into custody and sentenced "through capital punishment" following their release of a contentious video.
The Content That Triggered the Debate
The video footage, released on earlier this week, features six Democratic congress members who formerly served in armed forces or intelligence capacities.
"As we did, you all took an vow to protect and support this national charter," the representatives affirmed in the brief video. "And right now, the threats to our democratic foundation are not only from foreign nations, but from right here at home. Our regulations are explicit, you can decline unlawful commands, you can reject illegal orders, you should refuse illegal orders. No one has to carry out commands that break the legal system or our national charter."
The Former President's Angry Reaction
The recorded statement seemed to provoke a furious response from the previous commander-in-chief.
On later in the week, Trump wrote on his preferred platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional post, he declared: "This represents really concerning, and Harmful to our Country. Their comments cannot be enabled to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional post, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Officials Respond
Following Trump's statements on that day, Democratic leadership published a combined announcement denouncing the comments.
"Violent politics has no role in America," they declared. "Representatives who appeared in the video all served our United States with tremendous patriotism and honor. We strongly denounce Donald Trump's disgusting and harmful death threats against elected officials, and urge House Republicans to vigorously do the same."
The opposition officials also mentioned that they had been in communication with law enforcement "to guarantee the safety of these officials and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must immediately remove these unhinged online messages and withdraw his dangerous language before he gets someone killed," the statement continued.
Representatives' Defiant Response
The officials who appeared in the video also issued a response.
"We are ex-military personnel and defense specialists who value this nation and took an vow to protect and uphold the constitution of the United States," they stated. "Our pledge is permanent, and we intend to keep it. No warning, pressure, or incitement will prevent us from that important obligation."
"The significant point is that the former president views it liable to punishment by capital punishment for us to repeat the law," they stated. "Military personnel should recognize that we have their support as they carry out their vow to the founding principles and obligation to obey only legal commands. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."
They stated: "The entire nation must come together and condemn the former president's demands for our death and partisan aggression. This is a time for ethical certainty."
Additional Partisan Reactions
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's statements and posted on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is requesting the death of government members."
He added: "This is an clear THREAT. All senators, every Representative, all citizens – regardless of party – should censure this without delay and unconditionally."
The GOP leader justified Trump's claim that the Democrats had engaged in "treason", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", adding: "This represents very dangerous, you have important representatives of Congress telling military personnel to disobey orders, I think that represents historic in the nation's past."
The Conservative representative also according to sources stated to the press that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "describing the crime of treason" but that "lawyers have to parse the wording and determine all that."
White House Statement
During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when questioned by a media member, "Is the president want to execute elected officials?", the executive branch representative answered: "Certainly not."
"Let's be clear about what the president is responding to," the spokesperson stated. "You have current representatives of the American legislature who worked together to orchestrate a video message to personnel of the US military, to serving soldiers advising them to disobey the executive's lawful orders."
She stated: "The purity of our defense system rests on the hierarchy, and if that structure is compromised, it can lead to people getting killed, it can result in chaos, and that's what these elected officials ... are essentially encouraging."
