Gareth Southgate has made clear that he is avoiding a re-entry into football management, pointing out that it would be challenging to match the higher calling he encountered as England’s manager.

He indicated his aim to channel his attention toward supporting young people and combating what he called a dominant downbeat story currently existing in the country.

Embracing New Avenues Outside of Coaching

Speaking on air, Southgate was asked about speculation linking him with vacant management roles in the top flight and abroad.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he answered. “That’s going to be very hard to replicate. Having had 37 years in football I’m enjoying finding other areas where I think I might be able to make a difference.”

A Passion for Positive Examples

Ahead of the release of his new title, Dear England: Lessons in Leadership, he stated that he is “very passionate” about setting examples for the youth, utilizing insights from his period as England’s men’s football manager between 2016 and 2024, as well as his role as a father.

He believes that his time coaching England, during which the team shifted from being deeply unpopular to broadly loved, holds wider relevance.

“We had a huge disconnect with the public when we started,” he explained. “The public viewed the players as egotistical, yet we successfully reversed that image. The squad’s ability to connect diverse communities was truly powerful.”

Family Life and Influencing Youth

Reflecting on his role as a parent, he remarked: “Parents strive to offer their children a great beginning, but eventually, kids tune out. My household is no different, but I’m convinced this is a vital focus for society.”

He continued: “A downbeat tone surrounds the nation now, and it’s essential to provide hope and advice to the younger generation. While talent abounds, accessing suitable mentors and peer networks is crucial, since these factors heavily influence lifelong outcomes.”

Common Ground Above Discord

He asserted that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the cultural focus often emphasizes division.

“It’s understandable why people are disaffected,” he commented. “Financial struggles affect numerous communities, fueling calls for transformation. Yet, I’ve observed the capacity to bring the nation together. During the pandemic, I witnessed neighbors helping each other—that’s when the UK excels, demonstrating strength and unity in adversity.”

The manager’s new release, the book Dear England, is set to offer further insights on management and country pride drawn from his distinguished career.
