Gavin Newsom Acknowledges He Is Weighing a 2028 Presidential Run
Gavin Newsom, a well-known Democratic figure, has revealed that he will make a decision about whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 once the 2026 congressional elections conclude.
"Absolutely, I couldn't be truthful if I denied it," Newsom remarked when questioned about seriously considering a campaign for president following the 2026 ballots. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I can't do that."
The governor's current term as California's leader ends in January 2027, and he cannot run again. But, he emphasized that any determination is not imminent.
"It's up to destiny," he added.
Increased Visibility as a Trump Critic
The California governor has come to the forefront as a notable critic of the former president's team, employing his online platforms and pushing a ballot measure that would expand Democratic representation in Congress in as a counter to redistricting by Republicans. This action has made him a target from political opponents.
Federal Funding Dispute
The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor is indifferent about Californians in a recent appearance on Fox News. Duffy revealed plans to withhold federal funds from the state and threatened suspending the authority to grant commercial driver's licenses.
"I intend to cut $160 million from California," he declared, following a this week's fatal crash in the state involving an non-citizen trucker that led to loss of life and four injuries.
His administration noted that the U.S. government had renewed the driver's employment multiple times, which permitted him to receive a trucking license under federal law.
The transportation secretary had before announced he was withholding $40 million from the state for ignoring linguistic standards for truck drivers.
Strong Response from the Team
"Ex-reality TV personality, now transportation chief, fails to grasp national statutes," his administration said in a previous comment responding to Duffy's threats. "For now, unlike this clown, we rely on data: The state's truck drivers had a fatal crash rate significantly lower than the national average. The state of Texas – the sole state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Facts don't lie. The federal leadership misleads."
Polling Data and Future Prospects
A recent study showed that a majority of the party and almost half of voters believed that Newsom must consider running for the White House in the next election cycle. In recent years, his approval ratings has increased to an average of a third from around 30%, while his disapproval has decreased from an mean of more than 40% to under 40%.
Some time ago, Newsom remarked while visiting several swing states that he had "no idea" about his plans for 2028.
He noted his personal struggles, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the young age of five.
"The notion that a individual who scored 960 on the SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was often seated at the back – the idea that you would even throw that out is, in and of itself, amazing," he commented. "No one can say? I am eager to see who presents themselves in the next election and who answers the call. And that is the issue for the U.S. citizens."
