Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their recent conversation.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.

“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that reassures me, that he feels like that and he expresses himself so positively.”

New York police issued security footage earlier this week of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.

The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday morning in the area between the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse just had a child.

“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd was inactive during the current season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.

Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was projected as a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on early August and had to be helped off.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while healing from his surgery.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he attends every game. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
