The distinctive yellow-colored residential building in the background helped us verify the video.

We are verifying video footage and photographs posted this morning that depict the aftermath of a reported car bomb explosion that Russian officials say killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.

Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed of his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.

Our starting point to verify the location of where the pictures originated was based on social media reports saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.

We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a nearby residential complex seen in the video.

Locating additional structures, streetlights and the street layout verified where the footage were taken.

We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
