Manchester United Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for the WSL Side
The forward, with six months left on her contract, is known as a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee coup for the WSL team.
Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated after she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading strikers. According to reports, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a major uplift to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United seem to be gathering momentum.
Their recent performances feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional business:
- The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having arrived from a side from the American league, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
