Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin, guitarist for experimental group Black Midi, has died at the age of 26
Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin, the guitar player who was a founding member of the acclaimed British avant-garde rock band Black Midi, has passed away at the age of 26.
Family Statement
A message from his loved ones said he passed away “after a long battle with his mental health. A gifted artist and a gentle and caring soul finally succumbed; despite all efforts.
“He will forever be cherished. Please pause for a moment to check in with your family and friends so we can prevent this from occurring to our young men.”
Posting the message on social media, the band's label described Kwasniewski-Kelvin “an incredibly talented person who will be truly missed”.
Rise to Prominence
Kwasniewski-Kelvin was instrumental in shaping Black Midi into one of the most discussed, musically adventurous rock bands in the past decade, after meeting the other musicians at the London performing arts institution Brit School.
After being attracted to pop-punk and traditional rock as a youngster, Kwasniewski-Kelvin became fascinated with noise music and experimental rock after encountering band leader Geordie Greep, and these elements – plus plenty more – coalesced into an energetic, progressive musical style on their 2019 debut album, 'Schlagenheim'.
The band earned a dedicated cult following and the album was nominated for that year’s Mercury prize. It was also awarded the publication Pitchfork's “Best New Music” rating, with the album described as “magnetic and dazzling”.
Later Years
Kwasniewski-Kelvin left the band in 2021, due to his mental health difficulties. The band commented at the time they were “completely supportive of our close friend in his recovery”. They continued as a trio, recording two more studios albums before parting ways in 2024.
