An extensive industrial complex situated on the outskirts of the capital is dealing with radioactive contamination after a government taskforce detected traces of the hazardous isotope Caesium-137 at twenty-two manufacturing facilities within the site, that includes companies that export frozen seafood.

Emergency Measures and Goods Recall

This discovery has led to immediate decontamination efforts and the relocation of local residents, following a similar pollution alert in the US that was traced back to the Indonesian facilities.

A major international retailer is one of the companies that have withdrawn items from its stores following the finding.

Investigation and Detection of Contamination

Indonesian authorities launched an inquiry after the US Food and Drug Administration detected Caesium-137, a nuclear isotope, in a consignment of chilled coated shrimp exported by an Indonesian company.

The FDA issued an advisory instructing distributors and sellers to dispose of the product and not sell it, even though the found amount was far below the authority's intervention limit. It added that the quantity of Caesium-137 they had found would not present an immediate risk to consumers.

The authority stated: “The main health effect of concern following extended, repeated small amount exposure (eg through eating of polluted products or liquid over time) is an elevated chance of cancer, caused by harm to DNA within living cells.”

Extensive Contamination and Medical Examinations

Radioactivity tests showed at least twenty-two plants in the industrial zone were contaminated. The Indonesian taskforce did not identify the 21 additional production sites, but said they would immediately undergo decontamination processes conducted by Indonesia's atomic energy agency.

A senior official stated that people residing in strongly contaminated zones would be relocated until the location was decontaminated, adding that the safety of the residents was the “top priority”.

Health officials also conducted examinations on nearby employees and residents living near the manufacturing zone, finding nine individuals who showed signs for exposure to Caesium-137. These individuals were referred to a medical facility before being allowed to go back.

Decontamination and Containment Measures

The affected sites will immediately receive decontamination operations by the national nuclear institute. Officials have further designated the area of a recycled metal plant as an containment facility for polluted materials.

The country, which has no nuclear power plants or weapons program, suspects that Caesium-137 may have entered the nation from overseas.

Origin of Pollution and Trade Limits

A taskforce spokesperson informed reporters that scrap metal imports were the likely cause of pollution and confirmed the authorities would immediately enforce restrictions on metal waste arrivals. It was stated that transport were also being inspected for possible exposure as they traveled through the area.

Regarding Caesium-137 and Health Risks

Caesium-137 is a dangerous nuclear element that usually enters the environment as a result of nuclear experiments or accidents, such as the Fukushima disaster or Chernobyl. Trace quantities are present in soil, products and the atmosphere.

The amount detected in the frozen prawns was far lower than FDA intervention levels, but the agency stated prolonged contact to even low doses of the element was linked to an elevated chance of cancer.

Withdrawal Details

The recalled shrimp was sold at large store locations across at least a dozen American states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia.
