Ken Burns has evolved into not just a documentarian; he is a brand, a one-man industrial complex. With each new documentary series heading for the PBS network, all desire his attention.

The filmmaker completed “more fucking podcasts than I ever thought possible”, he notes, nearing the end of nine-month promotional tour featuring 40 cities, 80 screenings and innumerable conversations. “There seems to be a podcast for every citizen, and I believe I’ve appeared on most of them.”

Thankfully Burns is a force of nature, as loquacious behind the mic as he is productive while filmmaking. At seventy-two has gone everywhere from prestigious venues to popular podcasts to talk about one of his most ambitious projects: The American Revolution, an extensive six-episode, twelve-hour film project that consumed the past decade of his life and premiered recently on PBS.

Timeless Filmmaking Method

Like slow cooking in an age of fast food, this documentary series is defiantly traditional, reminiscent of traditional war documentaries than the era of online content new media formats.

Burns adds: “Truly, this might be the most exceptional group recruited for any project. They do an extraordinary service. Their celebrity status wasn’t the criteria. I got so angry when somebody said, regarding the famous participants. I responded, ‘These are performers.’ They are among the world’s best performers and they can bring this stuff alive.”

Multifaceted Story

However, no contemporary observers remain, modern media compelled the production to depend substantially on historical documents, weaving together individual perspectives of nearly 200 individual historic figures. Early dissatisfaction and objections directed toward Britain by colonial residents throughout multiple disputatious regions quickly evolved into a brutal civil conflict, dividing communities and households and neighbour against neighbour. For him, the revolution is a story that “for most of us suffers from excessive romance and nostalgia and lacks depth and fails to properly acknowledge actual events, every individual involved and the extensive brutality.

Taylor maintains, a revolution that proclaimed the world-changing idea of inherent human rights; a bloody domestic struggle, dividing revolutionaries and royalists; and a worldwide engagement, the fourth in a series of conflicts between Britain, France and Spain for the “prize of North America”.
