The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure by Critical Role, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at several agonizing backstories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.

Overall, the opening looks amazing. However, I felt that an element was missing in the song choice.

The intro uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song composed by artist the talented musician. It's a track originating from the official score of the same name, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I believe that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician the artist, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when cast member the performer wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in the later year.

Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the track was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. This track that excites you before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, the creators has already said that the animated show will have some changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening seems to be one of them.
