What We Know Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 lives were killed and more than 40 sustained injuries when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have labeled a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were transported to hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting officially identified, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the shooting, saying they were standing when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, a senior official expressed that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with five in critical condition. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
