WHO Raises Alert Over Acute Shortage of Weight-Loss Jabs
Under 10% of people who could benefit from weight-loss injections such as Wegovy can access them, states the World Health Organization as it releases its inaugural advice on the medications.
With more than one billion people worldwide now obese, it is advocating for increased and just access to this class of drugs.
Per projections, in excess of 2,000,000,000 will be living with obesity by 2030 without intervention.
"The latest guidance affirms that obesity is a lifelong illness that can be treated with holistic and continuous support," stated the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
High costs, insufficient output, and logistical bottlenecks are major hurdles to universal access to the jabs that can assist patients in reducing considerable body mass, notes the body.

Even in the current most optimistic case, the production of GLP-1 therapies would only suffice for about 100 million people – under 10% of the global need, as stated by the health organization.
The advice encourages governments and firms to expand access, via strategies like licensing agreements.
The intellectual property rights on the active ingredient – the primary ingredient of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in several nations in 2026.
