Powerful cold-season gusts brought walls down onto fragile shelters sheltering Palestinians uprooted by war in Gaza, killing at least 4 people. This tragedy underscores the perilous situation that persist after over two years of intense airstrikes and severe lack of aid.

Ceasefire Provides Little Respite from Severe Weather

While a truce has been active from October, humanitarian organizations state that residents broadly lack the sufficient housing required to survive frequent cold-weather events.

Officials at Shifa hospital, which took in the bodies, said on Tuesday that the deceased include a pair of adult females, a young female, and a man.

Separately, the local health authority stated on the same day that a 12-month-old infant died of extreme cold overnight.

"International actors has enabled us to witness loss of life in all its forms," stated a family member following the burial. "While it is correct the shelling may have paused for now, but we have witnessed every conceivable cause of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Relatives Crushed in Tent Collapse

According to Shifa hospital, 3 members of a single family — 72-year-old Mohamed Hamouda, his teenage relative, and his daughter-in-law — were fatally injured when an 26-foot high wall collapsed on top of their tent in a coastal area of Gaza City. At least 5 others were injured in the incident.

Family members on Tuesday began clearing the rubble that had entombed their family and rebuilding the tent shelters for those who remained.

Aid Efforts and Continuing Emergency

The UN and its humanitarian partners were handing out tents, tarps, blankets and clothing as well as food and sanitation supplies throughout Gaza, stated the relevant UN coordination body.

Most of Palestinians reside in makeshift tents since their homes were turned into ruins over the course of the war. Humanitarian organizations contend not enough building supplies are reaching Gaza under the truce.

Fatality Numbers After the Ceasefire

Local health authorities, which is part of the Hamas-run government, reports more than 440 individuals have been fatally shot by Israeli fire and their bodies taken to hospitals since the truce began. The authority maintains detailed fatality data that are considered largely accurate by international bodies and independent experts.

James Elder, representing the UN children's fund, stated on Tuesday that at least 100 minors below eighteen years old – sixty males and 40 girls – had been lost their lives after the ceasefire began due to armed actions, including drone strikes, air raids, artillery fire and use of live ammunition. Those figures, he explained, reflected incidents where enough details had been compiled to warrant recording, but the overall count is expected to be higher. He noted that hundreds of minors had been wounded.

"While 'bombings and shootings have slowed' under the ceasefire, they have not stopped," Elder informed journalists at a UN briefing in the Swiss city by video link from Gaza City. "So what the world now calls quiet would be considered a catastrophe anywhere else," he said.

Third Winter of Struggle

Gaza’s residents of more than 2 million people has been struggling to fend off the cold weather and bad weather away while facing lack of humanitarian aid and a lack of more substantial temporary housing, which is badly required during the colder season. This marks the third cold season since the war between the state and Hamas began on a date in late 2023, when fighters stormed into Israeli territory and killed approximately twelve hundred people and took hostage two hundred and fifty-one others into Gaza.

Gaza’s health ministry reports more than seventy-one thousand four hundred people have been killed in the subsequent retaliatory offensive.
